A molecular ion is a covalently bonded set of two or more atoms, or of a metal complex, that can be considered to behave as a single unit and that has a net charge that is not zero. Unlike a molecule, which has a net charge of zero, this chemical species is an ion. In older literature, a polyatomic ion may instead be referred to as a radical. A simple example of a polyatomic ion is the hydroxide ion, which consists of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom, jointly carrying a net charge of

For example, NO 3− is the nitrate ion; it has one nitrogen atom and three oxygen atoms and an overall 1− charge. Table 4.9. 1 lists the most common polyatomic ions. When polyatomic ions are included, the number of ionic compounds increases significantly. Indeed, most ionic compounds contain polyatomic ions.

I put down that it was non-polar and I did not put the arrows for the polarities yet because I was not sure. Do I do them any differently because it is a polyatomic ion? Right now I was thinking the arrows would all be P-|--> O. Polyatomic Ion NH 4 + or Ammonium: In most polyatomic ions, it contains oxygen and a negatively charged anions. Ammonium is one of the few positively charged polyatomic ions and doesn’t contain oxygen. Nitrogen has five electrons in its outermost shell, and it can have eight. When it shares electrons covalently with four hydrogen atoms.
