Matts Leiderstam: Matts Leiderstam (b. 1956, lives and works in Stockholm) holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Malmö Art Academy, where he also teaches. Matts Leiderstam’s work has often started from his experiences and desires related to classical paintings hanging in museums. To know more, he habitually repainted them, or made another form of what he calls ‘after-images’. He did this in

4 Abstract The point of departure for See and Seen (text, website and exhibition) is the conventions of the Ideal Landscapes painted in Rome during the 17th century by artists such as Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. In 18th century England this translated into a particular gaze Matts Leiderstam is a Swedish artist based in Stockholm. He obtained a PhD in Fine Arts at Malmö Art Academy in 2006 and studied painting at Valand Academy between 1984 and 1989. Leiderstam is currently working on the research project “What Does the Grid Do?,” with support from the Swedish Research Council. Matts Leiderstam at the Albright-Knox in 2001 creating a painting of Niagara Falls (after View of Niagara Falls, ca. 1807–1850) that would be incorporated into his artwork The Artist is at Niagara Falls, 2001.
